The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
